That is a ridiculous statement. Why would a 64-bit port of a game be *slower*? Why would any program be slower if built for the x86_64 platform? That just makes absolutely no sense. I have not done many comparisons, but I know I have seen at least one program get a more than 2x performance boost between 32-bit and 64-bit builds.
