I found something from RH (and forgot to write it down where, sorry) but 
try adding something like (NB: on one line)

BUS=="usb",SYSfs{product}=="Palm Handheld", 
KERNEL=="ttyUSB*",Name{ignore_remove}=="pilot", MODE=="666"

as a file /etc/udev/rules/20-pilot.rules


I think that is what I needed to do to get my CLIE running.
