I use Gnome, but in KDE it must be similar: There is a "loudspeaker"-symbol at the Conrol-Panel. Click there with your right mouse button, then look for something like: "configure, preferences, setting" Open it and you will see a window with settings for your loudspeaker, microphone. line-in and a lot more... Look for PCM and if that is down, increase it!
