I agree. Alternatively, you can use a BIOS that lets you choose alternative boot drives, but continually rewriting your BIOS settings isn't a good idea (NVRAM only supports so-many rewrite cycles).
NVRAM is not what any of my machines use, at least. They use battery backed RAM. YMMV I suppose.
