KDE's evil artsd is often the cause of blocking the sound device. You can use the KDE control center to allegedly disable it, but if you ever run any KDE audio apps like noatun or kaboodle (both useless, at least as shipped by Fedora), it will spawn artsd even do. So if it is kde: killall -9 artsd and try again. -Andy
