Bust open a console window and type

top

this shows which processes are active sorted in various ways, by default
sorted by CPU time. Sounds like something is hogging your machine in an
evil way.

If you can't figure how to open a graphical console window (Red hat /
start button or KDE symbol or whatever | System Tools | Terminal on
this box) then type Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to a text console. Ctrl-Alt-F7
will get you back to the graphical world.
