Actually, it is "init 3"....  The display manager is started by init,
not the rc script called by init.  Take a look at the final line
of /etc/inittab which launches your "preferred display manager" in
runlevel 5.  So to stop it, we need to pick a runlevel other than 5, the
most common to choose being 3.....
