I have reinstalled xorg-x11-6.8.2-37.FC4.45.x86_64.rpm (and all the associated rpms) replacing xorg-x11-6.8.2-37.FC4.49.2.x86_64.rpm (and all its rpms), which is broken, and haven't had any trouble since. I have submitted a bug report to freedesktop bugzilla; it is number 4611. BTW: How can I keep yum from "upgrading" X windows? Thank you all for your assistance - jon
