Firewire docking station not hot-swappable...

I have a Sony VAIO r505e series notebook. The docking station (which
includes the cd and floppy drives) uses an internal firewire
connection.

I don't connect it often, but on occasion I need to make use of the CD
or floppy drive. A while ago (like, back around Fedora Core 1 days), I
was able to connect and disconnect the dock while the laptop was powered
on, and it worked fine, hotswap would detect the firewire drives being
connected and disconnected.

However, now in FC4, if I start the laptop up disconnected, later
connecting the dock does nothing. There is no message in dmesg, and it
certainly doesn't allow me to mount the CD.

Anyone have any experience with this? If any logs will help I can send
them.
