Can/have you tried  to install M$? I've had a prob with an M$ install once, turned out I had to flash the bios. Do you have the latest bios?

If you can boot into rescue mode from the first install disc
(`linux rescue`), you should then be able to chroot into your install
through its rescue shell, and run `chkconfig --del pcmcia` to remove it
from your startup scripts.
