actually I used the same from dag but yes it worked - thanks

I have been fooling with rhythmbox because it seemed to be more of what
I wanted but getting it to be friendly with everything else has not been
working - the first time it worked but since then, it crashes (another
thread).

So for now - using xxms with the faad2 plugin makes it play.

And for completeness to the thread...I found that to export from gtkpod,
I had to use this as a template for exporting m4a files from my iPod...

%o;%a - %t.mp3;%t.wav;%t.m4a

It would be nice if rhythmbox worked in this kind of environment but I
suppose that isn't going to work well in FC-3 perhaps FC-4
