Given the reliance HP have on Linux now, it wouldn't surprise me if things hadn't of changed out of all recognition. Which laptop was it that caused the problems? The only one I've had problems with (recently) was an Asus4400 which uses the Intel 915 chipset and a ATI portable 9X (I think!) video chipset. I couldn't get X to start.
