Well....I tried to telnet on port 3306, first from the linux box and was able to connect (I got 3.23.58 which I think is the version number of the MySQL client...) then I telnet'd from a windows workstation on the same network and got the same thing.........so Andy might be right that it is some kind of authenication problem.......
