It does. But I am pretty sure (it was over a month ago -- so I can't be 100% certain) I muted the IEC958. Maybe it was through gnome volume manager. This time I used alsamixer and it seems to have stuck. Is it possible the gnome volume manager is not working correctly. Anyhow, the distortion seems to have been corrected. I have never experienced sound being played just because I purposefully or accidentally focused on a file. I doesn't happen when I am another user. If its normal, I'll leave it alone. Don't forget I have been working on this for six weeks now, starting from complete sound ignorance. I have probably double thought myself into all kinds of problems and misunderstandings. Hearing that something is alright can be as important as hearing it needs to be fixed. > > > > > > > 6) system-config-soundcard plays the test sample but has the > worst > > > > > distortion of all. > See quoted advice and reply above. What should I do about it?? Bugzilla just sent me the following: Summary: distorted sound with es1371 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=161279 Added new HW switch to c-s-c (in rawhide) to bypass dmix. The change seems to be only in "rawhide" -- a RedHat version. Does this mean anything for my sound problems? My other problems persist. Regards Bill
