I don't use KDE (although the new plasma project looks interesting),
but if you have the KDE stuff installed, at the initial login screen,
select "Session" at the bottom, and then select KDE from the list.

I don't use Gnome, but I have. It's a menu item. Hunt through those
menus.
You're looking for Desktop Switching Tool or something like that.
Or, open a
root prompt and type 'switchdesk'
