Don't know what yum does on those nightly upgrades, but with apt I run nightly updates and upgrades, but with the --download-only option, so it doesn't acctually upgrade, but I can upgrade it manually without haveing to wait for the internet download to finish (I already have the packages in the cache). I personally think it's the best idea.
