Hmm. have you looked in /var/log/messages to see if there is anything
regarding the PPP failure on ppp1? Sounds like even though the modem
connection is up, that PPP is not getting initialized. There may be
a clue in that file.

I don't recall if you said, do you have a windows machine around you
could use to troubleshoot the connection for a period of time while
talking to earthlink support about it? A friend, perhaps, with a
windows laptop and modem that could be used for that?
