I'd have thought the simplest (and safest) thing to do was to add these repositories to /etc/yum.repos.d/ but with "enabled=0". Then if you want to install a particular program not in the standard repos you can say eg "yum --enablerepo=livna install <whatever>". I got in quite a confused state by running "yum update" with fedora-devel enabled.
