USB Disc (not Flash Stick) either /dev/sda1 or /dev/sde1

Anyone who can tell me why my USB DISC sometimes has to be
mounted as /dev/sda1 and sometimes as /dev/sde1?

And why does it show up as "usb (2)" on my desktop? In
an xterm it is accessed as /mnt/usb.

Also, I note that when I mount the CDROM, and then mount
a floppy, the icon for the floppy is right on top of
the icon for the CDROM.
