Does serial console still work?

I have a problem booting the Fedora-4 kernel on a SCSI machine.
(The aic7xxx driver is not loaded.)

Is there any way of printing out the kernel messages
before the panic occurs?

I was reading the Serial-Console HOWTO (dated 2003)
but it isn't clear to me if one can use it now with udev,
as /dev/lp0 does not seem to be defined sufficiently early.

Any advice or suggestions gratefully received.
