OK I ran rpm -V php-mysql and got an unsatisfied dependency for libmysqlclient.so.10. So I installed MySQL-shared-compat-4.1.11-0.i386.rpm and restarted apache.
$ rpm -V php-mysql
......G. c /etc/php.d/mysql.ini

$ rpm -qf /usr/lib/php4/mysql.so
php-mysql-4.3.10-2.4

I now have a mysql section in phpinfo() and no more error logs.

Many many thanks for you help.
