Dan I am experiencing the same problem, on different machines (AMD/Intel). Have just started to dig in to this. But upgrading as non-root is not permitted so its not much of a help. The usual remedie "rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db.*" followed by an "rpm -vv --rebuilddb" or "rpm --initdb" does not work because it encounters the same problem.
