FYI, someone posted a similar problem at
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=160480. True, it's
for setting and unsetting a session, but the symptoms are very similar
to my mysql_connect() problem.

I'll post updates as I find them ...
