Hi. I am running FC3 on a dual i686 box, with kernel 2.6.11-1.27_FC3smp. When I was running RedHat (versions 9.x and earlier), I had no problems with sound. Since moving to Fedora, sound no longer works. This problem originally occurred on an older uniprocessor machine, under both FC2 and FC3; it has persisted on my current machine (FC3 only). When running system-config-soundcard, I am told that the following audio device was detected: Vendor: Intel Model: Corp. 8201 EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller Module: snd-intel8x0 I then click the "Play test sound" button. No sound is emitted, and I am told that "Automatic detection of the sound card did not work. Audio will not be available on the system." I have used alsamixer to turn off muting, as well as to raise the volumes on the various channels. I have also chmod'ed /dev/sound and /dev/dsp to 666. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix the sound? Many thanks. PS: I have appended the output of lsmod and lspci, as well as the contents of /etc/modprobe.conf; maybe this information will help. ------%<--%<--%<---cut here---%<--%<--%<---------------------------- $ /sbin/lsmod Module Size Used by i915 22721 1 drm 67029 2 i915 nfsd 210913 9 exportfs 10177 1 nfsd parport_pc 31109 0 lp 16201 0 parport 38793 2 parport_pc,lp nfs 195625 2 lockd 64233 3 nfsd,nfs autofs4 22597 3 i2c_dev 13633 0 i2c_core 25665 1 i2c_dev sunrpc 138885 23 nfsd,nfs,lockd ipt_LOG 11073 2 ipt_REJECT 11073 9 ipt_state 5825 6 ipt_limit 6465 1 iptable_filter 6849 1 ipt_MASQUERADE 7489 1 iptable_nat 25597 2 ipt_MASQUERADE ip_conntrack 45481 3 ipt_state,ipt_MASQUERADE,iptable_nat ip_tables 25025 7 ipt_LOG,ipt_REJECT,ipt_state,ipt_limit,iptable_filter,ipt_MASQUERADE,iptable_nat md5 8129 1 ipv6 259681 16 video 19653 0 button 10577 0 battery 13253 0 ac 8773 0 uhci_hcd 35289 0 ehci_hcd 37197 0 snd_intel8x0 35329 0 snd_ac97_codec 73145 1 snd_intel8x0 snd_pcm_oss 55153 0 snd_mixer_oss 22465 1 snd_pcm_oss snd_pcm 92741 3 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss snd_timer 28741 1 snd_pcm snd 57765 6 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer soundcore 13217 1 snd snd_page_alloc 13765 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm tg3 87749 0 floppy 62289 0 dm_snapshot 21477 0 dm_zero 6465 0 dm_mirror 25885 0 ext3 131401 7 jbd 61401 1 ext3 dm_mod 60741 10 dm_snapshot,dm_zero,dm_mirror $ /sbin/lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corp. 82865G/PE/P DRAM Controller/Host-Hub Interface (rev 02) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corp. 82865G Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corp. 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 02) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corp. 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 02) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corp. 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB UHCI #3 (rev 02) 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corp. 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 02) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corp. 82801 PCI Bridge (rev c2) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corp. 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 02) 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corp. 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) IDE Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corp. 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) SMBus Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02) 05:02.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5782 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 03) $ cat /etc/modprobe.conf alias eth0 tg3 alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0 options snd-card-0 index=0 install snd-intel8x0 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-intel8x0 && /usr/sbin/alsactl restore >/dev/null 2>&1 || : remove snd-intel8x0 { /usr/sbin/alsactl store >/dev/null 2>&1 || : ; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-intel8x0 alias usb-controller ehci-hcd alias usb-controller1 uhci-hcd ------%<--%<--%<---cut here---%<--%<--%<---------------------------- -- Art Werschulz (8-{)} "Metaphors be with you." -- bumper sticker GCS/M (GAT): d? -p+ c++ l u+(-) e--- m* s n+ h f g+ w+ t++ r- y?
