I'm downloading the latest Linux via BitTorrent, a peer to peer system that shares the responsibility for sending the data among all the peers. On a whim, I decided to find out about the peers that are sending me the data; here is the info for the top 6 sources, which are responsible for sending me most of what has been downloaded so far. The most interesting thing is the location of the peers. In the info below the command host <ip-address> gives the URL for the specified IP address. Visible countries are: si: Slovenia it: Italy au: Australia The other sources, net and edu, are probably though not necessarily North American. Truly the internet is global. 1008 ~ $ host 194.249.156.59 59.156.249.194.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer teran.ijs.si. 1009 ~ $ host 131.175.67.135 135.67.175.131.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer tiziano.cesnef.polimi.it. 1010 ~ $ host 69.222.24.179 179.24.222.69.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer adsl-69-222-24-179.dsl.chcgil.ameritech.net. 1011 ~ $ host 211.29.132.173 173.132.29.211.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer mirror.optusnet.com.au. 1012 ~ $ host 218.137.220.137 137.220.137.218.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer YahooBB218137220137.bbtec.net. 1013 ~ $ host 152.3.183.77 77.183.3.152.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer torrent.linux.duke.edu. -- Jonathan Ryshpan <jonrysh@xxxxxxxxxxx> Berkeley Linux Team
