It does open ports on your computer, but you should not run bittorrent
as root (it doesn't need it) so there would not only have to be a bt
exploit, but the attacker would also need a local exploit.

There is - I don't recall off hand what it is, but you can throttle it.
Some schools block bittorrent - hopefully yours doesn't.

You might want to check with the CS department - they may already be
planning a local mirror.
