Hi

I have heard the "unnecessary" part before. But "dangerous"? why?

ext3 has gone through updates for example, the block reservation patch. http://lwn.net/Articles/81357/ and the ext2/3 defrag tool has not been updated in a long time basically because it isnt necessary. You really dont want to run an unmaintained tool like that on your filesystem just for the kicks
