The file used to read:

DESKTOP="GNOME"

And now it reads:

DEKTOP="KDE"
DISPLAYMANAGER="KDM"

Yes, I also want my display manager to be KDM so KDE is actually happy.  Unfortunately, this line seems to be getting ignored, and the display manager is still appearing as GDM.

when your system boots in the X mode .Select from the session the
desktop you want gnome or kde.When you choose any of those it will be
asked whether you want to keep it default say "Yes".Next time you boot
you will get KDE as default
