I should have explained - I was the original poster - that I was running the i386 version of FC-3 on my Athlon64 machine. This originally worked OK, but did not seem to work well with recent kernels. [Someone suggested that this was due to cpufreq, which I was running and which seems a reasonable candidate.] However, now I have installed the x86-64 distribution, and this seems to work beautifully. -- Timothy Murphy e-mail (<80k only): tim /at/ birdsnest.maths.tcd.ie tel: +353-86-2336090, +353-1-2842366 s-mail: School of Mathematics, Trinity College, Dublin 2, Ireland
