I just installed Fedora-3 x86-64 on an Athlon64 machine. [It had been running under the i386 distribution, but there seem to have been problems with recent kernels running i386 on an Althlon64 box. Someone suggested the problem might be connected with cpufreq, which I was running. However, it seemed simpler to install the correct distribution than try to work out what was wrong with the i386 one.] The installation went perfectly, and seems to run well. But when I ran "yum update" I got the error "file /usr/share/man/man1/xsubpp.1.gz from install of perl-5.8.5-12.FC3 conflicts with file from package perl-5.8.5-9" repeated many times. I have avoided the problem by adding "exclude perl*" to /etc/yum.conf and am currently processing 599 items. But I wonder (a) the reason for this problem, and (b) what one is meant to do about it? -- Timothy Murphy e-mail (<80k only): tim /at/ birdsnest.maths.tcd.ie tel: +353-86-2336090, +353-1-2842366 s-mail: School of Mathematics, Trinity College, Dublin 2, Ireland
