I am actually using scanimage but if I start xsane it ends saying no
scanner available.

I don't think this is appropriate. I am dealing with a bug which causes
scanimage (or xsane for that matter) to terminate abnormally leaving the
scanner in an open state and this bug is already reported.

I just want to be able to get my scanner available again without having
to reboot if this at all is possible.
