Out of curiosity, I did an APT-GET CLEAN and it processed and went back to a prompt with no messages or other indications at all.  I also did a YUM CLEAN and got the following:

Gathering header information file(s) from server(s)
Server - Fedora Linux 2 - i386 - core
Server - Fedora Linux 2 - i386 - freshrpms
Server - Fedora Linux 2 - i386 - updates
Finding updated packages
Cleaning packages and old headers

So that looks like it also updates at the same time.

However, I tend to use the program SYNAPTIC which is a gui front-end that I run under KDE.  It lets me sort and search and gives descriptions, etc.  It also tells me how much memory it will need to install and how long it will take.  With a 56k modem that is important for me.

Just do an
apt-get install synaptic

In an effort to keep things neat I noticed this option and ran it. Now
however when I go to get and update then I get the message (No Packages
marked for Update/Obsoletion). Up2date says there are 4 available. I
normally check for updates with it and then apply them with yum. So have
I screwed up what Yum knows about the system by doing a -clean all? If
so how do I repair it?
