you can get around this with

yum install xmms-mp3

(provided yum is set up correctly--see fedorafaq.org if it's not).
Xmms-mp3 isn't "free," but it's as free as playing mp3's with some
other player.

xmms-mp3 is in the DAG repository. baseurl=http://apt.sw.be/fedora/$releasever/en/$basearch/dag
