Sorry, I would like to, but it sounds like you did what I would have told you to do. I don't believe Linux really cares much about active partitions, etc, only Windows. Only thing I can suggest is to try the same thing again, but instead, do: grub-install /dev/hda. That's where I have it on my system - directly in the MBR. Windows xp is fine with it there. I have grub in the MBR, and the windows loader seems to exist in the first sector of hda1 (on both of our systems, so they co-exist very well. When you reinstall windows, grub gets overwritten, but then you just use the rescue disc or a boot floppy and grub-install /dev/hda. It works very reliably.
