Apologies for what is probably a very simple question -
but how exactly does one get the STABLE CVS version?

Incidentally, I found it was very simple to enable scanning with my card,
by installing the latest version of orinoco_cs (orinoco-0.15rc1.tar.gz).
I had resisted doing this,
because I do not like to run outside" kernel modules.
But in this case it turned out to be remarkably easy -
"make install" installed everything in the right place in /lib/modules/
replacing the previous version.
