Thanks for responding.

What I ended up doing was to create an entry in the /usr/share/hwdata/MonitorsDB
file for my VX910:

ViewSonic; ViewSonic VX910; VS10162; 24-82; 50-85

The third entry was the model number (which may not be the EISA ID).
I then run the "system-config-display" command and choose the VX910.
Next I edit the /etc/X11/xorg.config file (actually the first time I restarted
X and got the message "Out of Range" on the screen) and change the line
from:

VertRefresh  50.0 - 85.0
and
Modes    "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

to:

VertRefresh  50.0 - 75.0
and
Modes    "1280x1024"

(One could have changed the value in the MonitorsDB file, but it really is 85
and I guess my video card can not handle it).

Now I get 1280x1024.
