 The alias should look like
 
 Alias /webmail/ "/usr/share/squirrelmail/"

Thanks Alex and Matt!  Unfortunately, I've tried all
options, with quotes, without quotes, with slash,
without slash--both on the alias and the
directory--and the result is the same.  Could it be
something with the index.php file itself?
