I prefer Epson model. If you type "man sane-epson" you will see a list of Epson scanners compatible with SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy) which is an API for accessing scanners.
Install, gimp, xane, xane-gimp and you should be able to scan from gimp.
An HP multifunction machine (d135) works beautifully for me on FC2.
