Yes, exactly -- if there's stuff in the directory that doesn't belong to the firefox RPM, it just leaves it there, as that's basically the safest thing to do.

doesn't install Java. The new one did copy my Java plugin symlink.

Are you sure? I don't see anything in the package scripts to do that. Maybe there's a trigger in the Java plugin RPM?

Could be. These are the JPackage RPMs for Java 1.5.0.
