FC2 to FC3 upgrade error after "finding packages to upgrade..."

I'm wondering if anyone has run across an issue similar to this, or has any
suggestions to a solution.

Trying to upgrade a fully updated FC2 system to FC3, I select an "upgrade"
install. The installer pops up the "reading package information" dialog,
followed by "finding packages to upgrade". At this point the install fails
with the following error:

"... findpackageset.py line 149 in findpackageset
val=rpm.labelcompare(oevr,(epoch,h[rpm.RPMTAG_VERSOIN],
h[rpm.RPMTAG_RELEASE])) type error: argument 1, item 0 must be string or
none, not long"

I've googled around and see several very similar errors / bug reports...
but nothing re. a FC2 or FC3 upgrade.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Cheers,
