Thanks very much. I wonder why I couldn't find this tip in VMware's Knowledge Base...
Because VMWare 4.x isn't supported on FC3 or any of the recent platorms that use udev, perhaps. The solution is more likely to be found in the VMware newsgroups. See also http://platan.vc.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/vmware-any-any-update89.tar.gz, which takes care of this issue as well as some others (like building on 2.6.11 kernels).
