Silly question, but sure you had a medium in the burning device? The error message looks obvious.
agreed it does look obvious, but I do have a cd/r disc in the drive. I have also tried it with a dvd+r disc.
If yes you may try
cdrecord -v -dummy -speed=12 dev=/dev/hda bkup.iso
I get the same results here. I also tried: cdrecord -v -dummy -speed=12 dev=ATA:0,0,0 bkup.iso
