I've been having some problems getting the onboard sound to work on a Dell Dimension 4500. This is an Intel AC '97: (from lspci) 00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01) Kernel is 2.6.10-1.770_FC3 on a P4 2Ghz. lsmod shows the correct modules being installed: snd_intel8x0 33249 3 snd_ac97_codec 67489 1 snd_intel8x0 snd_pcm_oss 47989 0 snd_mixer_oss 17089 1 snd_pcm_oss snd_pcm 93001 4 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss snd_timer 29125 1 snd_pcm snd 52645 11 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer snd_page_alloc 9541 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm I've tried with "plug and play OS" both on and off in the BIOS (should this be "off" with FC 3 as with most other x86 UNIX and Linux variants? Looking in the dmesg output, there does seem to be some PnP junk...) system-config-sound and xmms both seem to work, except I don't hear anything. aumix and everything else I've tried seems to show the levels being set properly. I don't get any permission denied errors; after it didn't work, I did try mucking around with the permissions a little (mostly just doing a chmod a+rw on some of the relevant devices), but that didn't help. Any ideas on what I can do to get this working (other than to just install an old soundblaster card in the machine)? Any further info I can provide to help with troubleshooting? w
