Maybe you installed the nvidia sound drivers for your old kernel but not
your new one?  Just a guess...

Hmm, oh wait...you say it works in Gnome?  Control Center -> Sound System ->
Hardware tab, make sure your audio device is "Threaded Open Sound System",
then restart the sound server (or just restart KDE).

If that don't work, then I'm all out of ideas.
