Do you have it doing anything special to put the whole computer to sleep, or
is it the screensaver? Screensaver crashes are often due to video driver
problems -- what video card (or integrated graphics) do you have?

There's filesystem-integrity software called 'fdisk', but that'll get run
automatically during startup if needed. Otherwise, disk errors would
probably get noted in /var/log/messages (or, on newer systems, via the
"S.M.A.R.T." hard drive monitoring mechanism). And, there's a memory checker
called 'memtest86'. You can run this by booting from the install CD and
typing 'memtest' at the prompt. (Or maybe memtest86 -- I don't remember
offhand.) But assuming the problem is happening when your screensaver comes
on, let's check that out first.
