Just out of curiosity, why on earth would you need to do that? I wouldn't want to risk a running CPU by stopping the fan.

The processor fan was spinning very fast the noise it was making was driving me nuts. I did manage to solve the problem by changing a file here and there

/etc/cpuspeed.conf
VMAJOR=1
VMINOR=1
DRIVER="speedstep-centrino"
OPTS="-i 2 -t /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM/temperature 65 -a
/proc/acpi/ac_adapter/AC/state -p 10 25"
Also by turning on the cpuspeed process took care of this for me. :)

Get a new quiter fan. Not that expensive and will save that almighty bang if your processor overheats.
