Unfortunately, as far as I know, the Fedora install doesn't let you install to a USB hard drive: it doesn't detect it as a suitable target. There are work-arounds, but they might be rather "advanced" for someone new to Linux. I'd recommend getting hold of something like Knoppix, a live CD that will boot into Linux from the CD. You should then be able to use your internal hard disk or the IDE hard disk for storage. Are there any Linux user-groups in your area? They might be able to help. For what it's worth: two "advanced" workarounds. If you're happy opening up both the computer and the external hard drive, you will probably find that the hard drive contains a standard IDE drive that can be connected to your motherboard. You can then install to this normally. Alternatively, you could install to a spare hard drive somewhere, and use something like Knoppix to copy over the install image to your USB drive. There are a number of issues you will have to bear in mind. You will, in any case, have to run something like mkinitrd --preload=ahci --preload=ohci --preload-uhci to ensure that the Fedora install has USB support available while booting. And if you're copying filesystem images, you will have to use some partition-level text-based commands.
