Eric,

Did you try removing rhgb and quiet from the kernel command line at the
grub screen?  Type 'a' and backspace over these two options and hit
return.  You should see additional boot up messages as the kernel
initializes.  Also booting into runlevel 3 should disable rhgb and
quiet.
