My suggestion to the OP would be to start a new thread to see if anyone can get his Linmodem sorted out. I use a Lucent modem and with a little messing about the drivers can be made to compile using the kernel headers package.
W/Linmodems are definitely still a pain. I had fun with Ubuntu when I couldn't find gcc on the Live CD[1], which really does give you a Catch 22.
[1] Not sure if this is still the case, and apparently there is some kind of devel package on the install CD, just not installed by default. -- imalone
