I had your problem with older versions of Rhythmbox. Try the current one - 0.8.8
(OR MAYBE THERE IS A BETTER OPTION? - tried xmms but the library management & GUI is poor...)
Another neat player you could try is called Jmboree. It only works with ogg and mp3 (and only mp3 if you have the right gstreamer plugin - but that is true for Rhythmbox as well)
